Seattle Symposium on Cancer Outcomes Research

In collaboration with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center'sExternal Web Site Policy Outcomes Research Affinity Group, the Seattle Cancer Care AllianceExternal Web Site Policy, and the University of Washington School of MedicineExternal Web Site Policy, the Outcomes Research Branch sponsored the first Seattle Symposium on Cancer Outcomes Research, held on September 22-23, 2000 in Seattle, Washington. The symposium was designed to highlight several emerging areas in cancer outcomes research, including:

  • the measurement of cancer-related quality of life and costs;
  • the role of outcomes endpoints in clinical trials and "real time" cancer patient care; and
  • performance measurement and feedback as tools to improve care over time.

In addition to providing participants with tools to interpret and critique outcomes research as it applies to cancer research and clinical care, the symposium aimed to foster a dialogue between researchers, patients, providers, and payers about cancer care and cancer outcomes. Outcomes Research Branch chief Joseph Lipscomb was an invited speaker. His presentation was titled "The Outcomes of Cancer Outcomes Research."
